Georgian marionette copy

By hobey1 - Posted on 12 October 2008

In the 1991 I was staying with Angelela Beasley while touring in Savannah. Also staying with her was a troupe of Soviet Georgian Marionettists who were here in their sister city performing. At night we sketched each others' puppets. "Botchie" was the nickname of the Puppet builder/director Tengis Khaluashi who designed the adapted vertical marionette control. Also performing were George Salukauri and Natia Kupatadze. I copied his ballerina, but it doesn't work anywhere as well as Botchies' original. Angela did buy a figure which was amazing, but his performance, with two other marionettists, from Molier, featured a ballerina piroetting across a tiny stage in front of a blowing curtain. It was hypnotizing. Here are some photos of some of Botchie and George aand their puppets and stage, aas well as a drawing I made of the ballerina and a copy I made in the 90's.
